This meeting explores what has become a key priority for city planners, public health professionals, clinicians, school administrators, transportation professionals, and health educators: how to create, build and maintain communities that encourage and promote physical activity as a way of life.

The meeting includes:

· A keynote presentation by Richard E. Killingsworth, MPH, Director of Active Living by Design (http://www.activelivingbydesign.org/), a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that establishes and evaluates innovative approaches to increase physical activity through community design, public policies and communications strategies;

· Actual examples of how local communities throughout our state have implemented activities that increase physical activity;

· A presentation by the National Governor's Association (NGA) on its Leadership for Active Living Initiative in Washington State, as one of only 4 states participating in this program. The NGA plans to educate key Washington state leaders on the importance of designing "activity-friendly" communities and inspire change;

· Highlights from the Washington State Nutrition and Physical Activity Strategic Plan, which describes policy and environmental approaches to promoting physical activity;

· Research featuring current and future trends in outdoor recreation in our state;

· An awards presentation for individuals and organizations making outstanding contributions to this field; and

· Planned time to converse & meet other attendees.
